Local painting enthusiasts came together on Saturday, March 26 at Vandalia’s Modern Maturity Building to benefit the Story Link Program at the Women’s Eastern Region Diagnostic and Correctional Center (WERDCC).
The painting instructor for the afternoon was Sierra Parker Harmon, former Van-Far elementary art teacher.
Participants enjoyed an afternoon of painting, and learning more about the Story Link Program. Through Story Link, offenders with the Missouri Department of Corrections are able to select a children’s book and record themselves reading the book on a CD.
The book and CD are then mailed to their children or grandchildren.
The goal is to strengthen the bond between offenders and their children while providing encouragement to the families. Story Link, which is totally supported by donations, is offered in 11 state prisons in Missouri, including WERDCC and Missouri Eastern Correctional Center in Bowling Green.
Local Story Link volunteers who helped in organizing and promoting the event were Jennifer Gatson, Lavonne Jones, Denna Nichols, and Mary Orr.
