The 2017 Vandalia Area Fair Association has added a new “Greased Bowling Ball Contest” to its packed lineup of activities July 6-8.
This event is taking place of the Mud Pig Catch this year.
Bowling balls will be placed in a greased container and participants will then attempt to carry the greased bowling balls across the mud pit and place then into the winning container.
Contestants cannot use gloves or their clothing to carry the ball in the timed event.
Registration for the day two contest goes from 5:30-5:55 p.m. and features teams of one to two people and a $2 entry fee.
The event starts at 6 p.m. and participants under 18 must have a parent or guardian sign a consent form to participate. Contestants are also to wear shoes.
Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams in the following classes: ages 6-8, ages 9-14, ages 15-18, and an open class for any ages.
The 41st Annual Vandalia Area Fair features three days of entertainment.
Thursday evening features “Wayne Lynn & Friends” from 6-7:30 p.m. They will be followed by the return of “Class Act Duo,” Rick and Judy Francis from 7:30-9 p.m.
Day two’s entertainment features the return of “Contagious,” who is considered by many as “St. Louis’ Ultimate Party Band.” They will perform from 8-10 p.m.
The final evening features the return of the “Push Band” from 7-10 p.m.
The full schedule starts on Thursday with the decorated tricycle/bicycle contest at the Vandalia Post Office at 5 p.m. before the 5:30 p.m. parade that starts at South School.
At 6 p.m., the Alethea Club will host an Ice Cream and Cake Social in the school building.
Sign-up for the Little Mr./Little Miss Contest is slated for 6-6:25 p.m. in the pavilion before the 6:30 p.m. event.
Children must be 3-5 years old by July 1, 2017, must reside within a 30-mile radius of Vandalia, and the cost is $2 per child. Each participant will be expected to give a short interview on stage during the contest. There will be no late registrations.
The Horse Arena will be the site of the 7 p.m. Horse and Pony Fun Show. The entry fee is $4.
There will be more than 10 classes for the event.

The Missouri Farm Pullers will also start their event at 7 p.m. on the main track while “Class Act Duo” entertains at the Fair.

Day two features a 5:30 p.m. sign-up for the Mud Pig Catch in the Horse Arena. The event starts at 6 p.m.
From 6-10 p.m., the Dam Few Car and Motorcycle Drive-In will be held.
A Toy Scramble starts at 7 p.m.
“Contagious” entertains in the evening.
Day three opens at 4:30 p.m. as the Missouri Girls Rodeo Association (MGRA) training barrels begins. The MGRA event starts at 6:30 p.m.

“Push Band” concludes the Fair that evening.
The Fairgrounds will be open from 5-11 p.m. all three days. Inflatables open at 5 p.m. each day.
Admissions costs $5 on Thursday for all that come through the gate.
On Friday, admission costs $8 while kids ages 4-12 are $4.
On day three, admission is $10 while kids ages 4-12 is $5. Kids 3 and under are free all three days.
