Van-Far High School seniors Beth Owens and Ryan Decker will perform as members of the Northeast Missouri Music Educators Association All-District Bands. This is Owens’s second District Band selection and Decker’s first time being selected.
Each year the NEMMEA sponsors bands comprised of the best instrumentalists in the Northeast Missouri District.
Students auditioned for the band on Saturday, November 12 at Moberly High School. Auditions consist of each student performing a series of etudes and scales for a panel of judges. Owens and Decker were chosen from more than 200 players representing over 70 school districts.
Decker’s tryout earned him second chair among all the tubas that auditioned. His extremely high placement also qualifies him to audition for the All-State Band, which is selected in December.
This year’s bands will perform at Moberly High School on the evening of January 14 after a full day of rehearsal. The Honorable Mention Band will be conducted by Dr. Tom Polett. The Honor Band’s conductor will be Trent Hollinger. Both conductors are Instrumental Music Professors at Culver-Stockton College.
Owens is the daughter of Tony and Brenda Owens of Vandalia. Decker is the son of Kim Kohl of Vandalia and Dan Decker of San Antonio, Texas.
