Several family members and friends celebrated the retirement of Loretta Moss at the Vandalia Post Office last week. Moss recently announced her plans to retire after 21 years of service to the community.
“I want to thank all of my patrons for making my career so satisfying,” Moss said.
Moss’ tenure as a postal carrier concludes another chapter for her family in the postal industry.
Her grandfather Joseph Aderton retired in 1958 after nearly 40 years of service. She received his retirement certificate as a gift from her mother Norma Jean Shaw during a cake ceremony.
Moss’ father Alvin Shaw and mother Norma Jean Shaw were each rural substitute carriers while her uncle Gilbert Aderton once delivered mail on his bicycle.
Moss said she’ll miss the many older ladies on her City Route 2, who have given her cookies and made time for her in their homes over the past 20 years.
She added that she rescued two to three dogs during that time.
