Vandalia native Mike Smith recently wrapped up his fifth professional basketball season in Europe and had some success with Belgium’s Port of Antwerp Giants.
Smith, the oldest player on the team to start the year, was named MVP through the Giants’ Fan Club.
He averaged 13.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game.
His team finished in fifth place before losing in the first round of the playoffs.
During the season, the Port of Antwerp Giants did reach the Belgium Cup Finals and also advanced to the Fiba Europe Cup Final 8.
In the Final 8 quarterfinal, Smith scored a game-high 26 points in a tough loss. He made 10-of-11 shots from the field in the loss to the team that went on to the finals.
His teammates included former Notre Dame standout Carlton Scott, Iowa’s Melsahn Basabe, and St. Mary’s Brad Waldow, to name a few.
Smith said he’s been back in the states for about two weeks.
“(I have been) enjoying my time picking up on some golf with my buddies and spending time with my family,” he said.
Smith added that his future plans are still uncertain.
“My future plans are in the air as of now,” he said.
“I will wait and see what job opportunities come this Summer and make a decision that best fits my family and I.”
One lone plan for Smith is his 5th Annual Mike Smith Basketball Camp scheduled for Van-Far High School June 30-July 1.
This year’s camp will feature former Mizzou basketball player Laurence Bowers along with Marshall Corbin, Joe Basinger, Alicia Smith, and Matt Smith.
The 3rd-5th grade camp is set for 9-11:30 a.m., the 6th-8th grade camp is 12-2:30 p.m., and the 9th-12th grade camp is set for 3-5:30 p.m.
Cost is $35 to register and the deadline is June 17. Checks can be made payable and mailed to Mike Smith, 308 W. Washington, Vandalia, Mo. 63382.
