Mexico Senior Center meeting

Posted on Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at 12:25 pm

President Fred West called the Mexico Senior Center Council meeting to order on January 16. Present were: Bob Herrin, Vice-President; Molly Shellabarger, Secretary; Darlene Hiatte, Donald Bryan, and Chuck Ball. Absent was Dixie Collins, Treasurer; Doris Gore, and Leon Dempsey. Also present was Ione Bickell, Center Administrator.
The theme of the meeting was redecorating. The board has decided to make some much needed improvements to the Senior Center. The center has recently received a grant to do some remodeling. The board discussed the possible purchase of new carpeting, dining chairs, bar stools, and reception chairs for the pool room. The center is also hoping to get the facility painted and the floors waxed. All the board members are very excited about the future improvements to our Senior Center. It has been a very long time since the center has been able to redecorate.
With all of our improvements, we hope to attract more of the senior population of Audrain County. The board feels extremely fortunate to be in a position to make these changes to our d├ęcor.
Also discussed was having more days of celebration. There has been some interest in celebrating former employees of Wetterau. We are hoping to have this day in March. We would need to get a committee together to help us with this project. If anyone would like to get involved to help organize this event, call the center at 573-581-7743. It is always a lot of fun to see former employees get together and reminisce about the past.
The Senior Center served 1,720 congregate meals and 3,248 meals to our home-bound participants in the month of December. We added several new seniors to our home-delivered meals list and 12 new congregate participants. Total meals that the center provided to our seniors in December was 4968.
The meeting was adjourned at 1:30 p.m.
The Mexico Senior Center has a monthly silent auction held at the Center and it is a fundraiser. Anyone cleaning out things at home would be welcome to bring items to the Center for our silent auction. The public is invited too, not only to donate items, but to also bid on items for sale. The auction closes the last Friday of the month at 11:30 a.m. Any good slightly used items, other than clothing, would be welcome.
The Mexico Senior Center provides a buffet lunch Monday through Friday, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The suggested donation is $4 for persons 60 years of age and older and the same for their spouses regardless of age. For those people under 60, the price is $6.50. The center is open 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday for lunch, activities, and social gatherings. Some of the activities are pool, card playing, fun bingo and chair yoga. We have finger nail polishing twice a month, country music every other month, bluegrass music once a month, wellness screenings monthly, blood pressure check clinics four times a month, and a foot clinic every fourth Tuesday.
The Mexico Senior Center is located at 606 E. Park Street, Mexico Mo.
