On Tuesday, September 27, Mexico Public Safety received a report from a student of the Mexico Public School District that they had been touched inappropriately on a previous date by a teacher with the district. The reported act occurred more than once and in several jurisdictions, but did not occur on school property or during a school sanctioned event.
Mexico Public Safety requested that the Missouri State Technical Assistance Team (STAT) lead the investigation. When the school district learned of the allegations, the teacher was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
On Wednesday, September 28, at approximately 6 p.m., Robert V. Cortez, age 43, of Mexico, was arrested for the offense.
Cortez was taken to the Audrain County Jail for Sexual Contact With a Student, and is awaiting formal charges by the Audrain County Prosecuting Attorney. Cortez is the band director at the Mexico High School.
Citizens are reminded that people arrested and/or charged with a crime are simply accused of the crime and are to be considered innocent until proven guilty.
