Mexico, Mo. native, Tyronn Lue will return for a “Home Court Shout Out” homecoming celebration on July 2. The event is being held under the direction of the Mexico Chamber of Commerce. Lue is the head coach for the Cleveland Cavaliers and recently led the team to the 2016 NBA Championship, winning the city’s first professional title in 52 years.
Immediately following the win, Lue gave not one, but two shout outs to his hometown, Mexico, Mo. He also talked about his hometown during the post-game press conference.
To show the immense pride that Mexico has in their hometown hero on his return to his “home court,” a city wide celebration is planned.
The celebration will kick-off when Lue’s motorcade arrives in Mexico at 11 a.m. It will be escorted by Mexico Public Safety, Little Dixie Fire District, and school busses filled with Summer school students from Mexico Public Schools. Along with the Mexico Dixie Gray Band, the fans are invited to wear Cavalier colors (wine and gold) and line the motorcade route from the corner of Boulevard and Clark Street to Garfield Park. Once on Trinity Street, the crowd is encouraged to join in on foot and follow the procession to the park.
At the event in Garfield Park, presentations from the Mexico Public Schools, Mexico Area Chamber of Commerce, the City of Mexico and Audrain County officials will be made in honor of Lue. A choir of children from Second Missionary Baptist Church, St. Luke United Methodist Church and St. Paul CME Church will perform a special musical selection.
The event will culminate with Lue addressing the crowd.
There are plans to invite the community to help paint the Garfield Park Pavilion in Cavalier colors, prior to the July 2 celebration.
The painting project will be coordinated through the City of Mexico. Banners, signs, and marquees will recognize Lue for his accomplishments and area businesses are asked to decorate their store fronts for the occasion.
The public and press are encouraged to share content on all social media platforms using the hashtag #TyLueHomeCourt. In recognition of the many ways that Lue has given back to his hometown, the Mexico Area Chamber of Commerce is planning the first annual Tyronn Lue Community Day of Service in the Fall. This event recognizes the positive imprint Lue has made on the community through supporting opportunities for the youth of Mexico and never missing an occasion to put Mexico in the spotlight.
This event kicks off a weekend of celebrations with Tyronn Lue, his Annual 4th of July Fireworks Display on July 3 will be held at dusk at Garfield Park. This is a free event hosted by Lue and the public is welcome.
A limited number of car window clings and T-shirts commemorating the event will be available for purchase starting Wednesday, June 30 at the Mexico Area Chamber of Commerce, 100 West Jackson Street.
Lue’s 11-year career as a player landed him two previous NBA Championships.
