Melvin J. Chernault, age 97, of Bowling Green passed away May 3, 2015 at the Pike County Memorial Hospital in Louisiana.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, May 7, at the Bibb-Veach Funeral Home in Bowling Green with Rev. Joe Siefkas officiating. Burial will be in the Resthaven Cemetery in Wichita, Kan.
Visitation will be held 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, at the funeral home.
Melvin was born Feb. 22, 1918 in Bowling Green, the son of Walter Lee and Pelina Bell Palmer Chernault. On May 18, 1946 he married Hazel Smith. She preceded him in death on April 28, 1991. He then married Margaret Ann Crow Calvert Aug. 29, 1993. She also preceded him in death.
Survivors include a son Daniel L. Chernault and wife Robin of Houston, Texas; and step daughters Sherry Robinson and husband Larry of Decatur, Ill. and Lesley Dowell of Mesa, Ariz.; nieces JoAnn Cox, Elizabeth Taylor, and Sharon Adkins; grandnieces Rhonda Pugh and Connie Fisher.
Melvin lived in many towns in the south as a child and also lived in Omaha, Neb. and Overland Park, Kan. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Bowling Green and served in the United States Army during World War II as a First Sergeant. Melvin was a member of the Bowling Green Rotary Club and Bowling Green Library Board, and enjoyed woodworking. His passion was reading. He would read several books a week and enjoyed his daily afternoon coffee at Crystals Restaurant.
