History of the Cruise Night
A cruise and car show made perfect sense as a way to raise money when the “Last burger was served at the Old Tavern.”   After a fire destroyed the Branding Iron Restaurant, a celebration was planned to mark the successful cleanup of the lot located at the corner of Washington and Main (now the home of Bruce Boyes). The local Betterment Council envisioned a gathering of the community to enjoy one last hamburger at the local tavern with a backdrop of a car show and an appearance by Elvis.  From that successful evening, the Cruise Night has become a Martinsburg tradition.
The proceeds from the Car Cruise and Poker Run are to help Martinsburg Area Community Betterment in “promoting good community relations in Martinsburg.”
The Council was founded in 1997 when Martinsburg Bank donated the building now known at the Martinsburg Branch Library and Community Room.
Cruise Night has become the group’s major fundraising effort to meet the expenses related to the upkeep of the building and various other community undertakings.  Previous projects for the Council have included new playground equipment at the City park, Jailhouse restoration, hosting a “trunk or treat” for Halloween 2012, and hosting an Art and Home Tour in January 2013.
