“The Vandalia Leader” was the recipient of two awards during this past weekend’s Missouri Press Association Convention held Saturday, October 1 in Branson.
For the second year in a row, photographer Ben Marshall received a first place plaque in the “Best News Photo” category.
His photo was of two young girls enjoying a roller coaster ride while seeing the faces of others on the same ride in the background at an area festival earned the first place plaque in Weeklies Class 1.
“The look on their faces is priceless,” said MPA judges in their comments. “You can tell they are having a wonderful time, yet many are a wee bit scared.”
“The Vandalia Leader” General Manager/Editor Ron Schott said he is happy to see Marshall recognized for his photo.
“Ben works extremely hard for our publication and puts in countless hours to cover the many events in Audrain County during the year,” Schott said. “He continues to take high-quality photos to capture the memories of many of our readers. It’s extremely difficult to take first place in the ‘Best News Photo’ category. To do this two years in a row is something he should be extremely proud of. If you see Ben this week, please be sure to congratulate him on his success.”
Schott earned second place in the MPA’s “Best Military Story” category for his article entitled “Hero is coming home after 45 years MIA.”
The judges said it was a “good story on MIA’s remains returning home from Vietnam.”
