Lucas Robinson, a freshman from Vandalia, was inducted into the Blue Blazers Investment Committee at Westminster College in Fulton, Mo.
Robinson is the son of Mathew and Esther Robinson, of Vandalia. Robinson plays football for Westminster College and is majoring in Business Administration. He graduated from Van-Far High School in 2015. Established in 1996, the Blue Blazers Investment Committee is a selective, student maintained investment committee that encourages intellectual growth and educates undergraduates on the use of investment vehicles in capital markets.
The group has received both state and national media attention.
“Our students who become Blue Blazers gain real world experience with the financial investment world as their classroom,” said Dr. Benjamin Ola. Akande, President of the College. “Through this investment committee, domestic and international students with a wide range of majors and interests learn business and finance at the highest level.”
Every year the Westminster Board of Trustees allocates college endowment funds to the Blazers to invest in the stock market. The students do extensive research and then buy and sell stock to build and manage an actual investment portfolio. The group is self-governing and enjoys great autonomy over investment decisions. They are free to buy and sell stocks and other options. Through this experience, they receive the rare opportunity to experience how investing in the stock market works firsthand.
Currently, the group is managing $495,000.
Blazers are required to report to the Board of Trustees and inform them about developments in the group and the portfolio.
Some of the profits from successful investment years make it possible for committee members to visit major financial investments centers on Wall Street in New York City every two years.
Fourteen Westminster students learned about the world of Wall Street firsthand when they visited New York City this past February as members of the Blue Blazer Investment Committee (BBIC).
The Blue Blazer Investment Committee is one of over 50 clubs and organizations on the Westminster campus.
