Local veterans honored at Van-Far, Community R-VI ceremonies

Van-Far School District recognizes local veterans on Veteran’s Day

The Van-Far R-I School District honored local veterans with its annual ceremony held on Veteran’s Day Tuesday, November 11. After a breakfast was served to veterans in the morning, the ceremony started with a parade of veterans, escorted by Van-Far athletes.
Several chairs were filled with veterans from the Vandalia area during the ceremony.
Chief Petty Officer (Retired, U.S. Navy) John Masulit wore his uniform that was 49 years old to the event.
Van-Far Jr./Sr. High Band/Choir Director Alex Cucciarre and Guidance Counselor Jackie Waller led those in attendance in the singing of the “National Anthem.”
NHS President Brooke James led those in attendance in the “Pledge of Allegiance.”
The Van-Far Chiefs Band and Choir followed with the “Armed Forces Medley.”
The Van-Far Choir also performed “America the Beautiful.”
This year’s guest speaker, who was introduced by James, was Staff Sergeant Richard Malone from the Missouri Army National Guard in Hannibal.
During his speech, Staff Sergeant Malone made special recognition of World War II veterans who were in attendance.
He also gave recogntion to those who served in the Korean War, Vietnam War, Persian Gulf War, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and others.
He talked about what it meant to him to be a veteran and gave a presentation on the history of Veteran’s Day/Armistice Day.
Van-Far Jr./Sr. High School Principal Cindy Pirch closed the ceremony with a few remarks.

Community R-VI students and staff honored area military veterans with a Veteran’s Day Celebration on Friday, November 7.
The event featured an opportunity for district students to use their musical talents as a way to pay tribute to the many area veterans who served.
ISG Randal Jacobson directed members of the Missouri Military Academy for the “Presentation of Colors.”
