Local students get scholarships

Untitled-6The University of Missouri Agricultural Alumni Association provided $50,000 in scholarship money to 25 CAFNR upper class students for the 2014-2015 academic year. The association funded over $18,000 in teaching and educational enhancements for the college’s, students, faculty, and staff last year.
The University of Missouri Ag Alumni Association and its board of Directors is dedicated to the goals and traditions of the College of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources. With 3,000 members, the association provides student scholarships and funding for student academic and professional development programs. Alumni members assist in recruiting future CAFNR students and serve as mentors for current students. Candace Gatson is the daughter of Greg and Jennifer Gatson and has been selected to receive a $2,000 scholarship from the Missou Ag Alumni Association.
A native of Vandalia, Gatson is entering her sophomore year at Mizzou as an Agribusiness Management major. She is an active member of CAFNR Student Ambassadors and Missou Collegiate Cattle Women.
“Agriculture is our future and that future needs innovative young students,” Gatson said. “CAFNR is full of supportive people and resources that continue to make my college experience the absolute best, and help my vision for agriculture come to fruition.”

Jessie Fowler is the daughter of Bruce and Martha Fowler and has been selected to receive a $2,000 scholarship from Missou Ag Alumni Association.
A native of Vandalia, Fowler is entering her junior year at Mizzou as an Agribusiness Management major. She is an active member of CAFNR Student Ambassadors, CAFNR Student council, Zou Crew, and Missou collegiate 4-H.
“Growing up on a farm in rural Missouri, I selected CAFNR as my academic home because of the values this college has, which are consistent with my own,”  Fowler said.
“Agriculture has always been a huge part of who I am and I wanted to continue to pursue that as a career. I knew CAFNR would be the most beneficial to making those career goals a reality.”

Elissa Hoyt recently received a $2,000 scholarship from the MU Ag Alumni Association.
Elissa Hoyt is the daughter of Terry and Joy Hoyt and has been selected to receive a $2,000 scholarship from the Missou Ag Alumni Association. A native of Laddonia, Missouri, Hoyt is entering her senior year at Mizzou as an Agricultural Education-Leadership major. She is an active member of MU Block and Bridle and the Agricultural Education Society.
“An important piece of advice before entering college would be that it’s okay to not know what you want to do when you grow up, or even what you want to major in,” Hoyt said. “You need to get to know yourself first away from home.”

Ryan Nelson is the son of Ralph and Christina Nelson and has been selected to receive a $2,000 scholarship from the Mizzou Ag Alumni Association.
A native of Vandalia, Missouri, nelson is entering his junior year at Mizzou as a Plant Science major. He is an active member of the MU Agronomy Club and CAFNR Student Council.
“CAFNR has always been at the top of my list,” Nelson said. “I’ve always loved agriculture and knew that CAFNR was where I wanted to be.”
