League of Women Voters hold Candidates Forum

The Mexico/Audrain League of Women Voters sponsored a Candidates Forum the Tuesday before the election at the Mexico Chamber of Commerce.
During the event, candidates gave their qualifications and reasons for seeking the position.
They also answered written questions submitted by the audience.
Candidates who talked with the audience include Ed Lockwood, State Rep. District 43 candidate, Democrat, and Rep. Jay Houghton, Republican; J.W. Toalson and Mike Groves, Western District Audrain County Commissioner race, Democrats; Tracy Graham and John P. Ogden, Western District Audrain County Commissioner race, Republicans;  Susan Paden and Alan Winders, Eastern District Audrain County Commissioner race, Republicans;  in the Sheriff race was Chad McDonald, Democrat, and Matt Oller, Republican; and Audrain County Assessor Melissa Maupin.
All of the commission candidates were asked the following questions:
• What do you feel is the most urgent need of Audrain County residents?
• How would you handle citizen complaints?
• What would you do first as a commissioner to improve Audrain County government?
• What do you see as the future capitol and facility needs of Audrain County and how would you address them?
• With today’s current environment and potential for physical threats, what action should be taken to protect patrons and county employees when visiting or at the courthouse?
• How should the county use the Pearl Motor building?
The sheriff candidates were asked the following:
• What are your plans to address the office safety concerns as well as the courthouse security?
• Will you consider having a deputy who lives within Vandalia?
• What would you implement to curve the drug problem in Audrain County?
• How would you handle citizen complaints?
