Lawrence W. Portwood

Lawrence W. Portwood was born on Aug. 17, 1925 in St. Charles to J. R. and Veva (LaRue) Portwood. He died of pneumonia on May 28, 2013 in Mexico.
Lawrence was preceded in death by both parents, one son – Benny Portwood, and three brothers – Garvin Portwood, Billy Portwood, and Carl Portwood. He is survived by two sons, Tommy Harrell, Mike Portwood and wife Lucy, one daughter, Brenda Portwood, three brothers – Harry Portwood, Larry Portwood, and Dennis Portwood, three sisters – Norma Flemming, Betty June Tennison, and Margaret Kielty, and many grandchildren, nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
He served in the Navy during WWII and was in a great deal of combat in the South Pacific. He also served four years in the Marine Corps during the Korean War.
Lawrence was a member of New Galilee Christian Church for many years. He donated his body to the St. Louis University Medical School and according to his wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial services.
The family has requested that anyone wishing to make a charitable donation in Lawrence’s honor should consider the Missouri Veteran’s Home in Mexico, where Lawrence was a resident for the past five years.  They are currently attempting to raise money for the purchase of a new handicapped-accessible van.
