Several friends, family members along with past and present City of Vandalia employees gathered for a Retirement Reception to celebrate the career of Denise Laird. The event was held at the Lange Building on Thursday, June 1.
Laird served as the Utility Billing Clerk for 29 years.
Interim City Administrator Alan Winders opened with some brief remarks.
“We all know why we’re hear to honor Denise’s long and extensive career with the City of Vandalia providing really some excellent public service,” Winders said. “…On behalf of all of the citizens of the community, thank you very much…You will be missed at City Hall.”
He shared a fun story of when he started as City Administrator more than 10 years ago and that Laird told him that she would be still with the city when he left.
“Well to that I said, ha,” Winders said in fun. “I guess the joke’s on me.”
“I love working with the public and that’s what I’m going to miss the most,” Laird said.
Mayor Ralph Kuda also acknowledged Laird.
“I would like to thank Denise for all of the years of service you had, the work that you done, the people you put up with,” he said. “We’re going to miss you.”
