It took two overtimes but the Community R-VI Middle School girls basketball team found a way to hold off the host Lady Panthers to win the Madison Tournament championship.
In the title game, Emmi Johnson hit two key 3-pointers in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter to take the lead.
The Lady Trojans pulled ahead in double overtime to win the game, 34-30.
Alexis Welch had 14 points and Johnson finished with 12.
“This was a very exciting game,” said Community R-VI head coach Stacey Carroz.
In their first game, the Lady Trojans jumped out to a 16-1 first-quarter lead and led by 16 at halftime before cruising to a 46-14 win.
Brianna Beamer scored a team-high 14 points while Welch added 12 points.
Emma Angel had eight points while Shelby Clark, Lachlan Elsey, and Johnson each scored four points.
Falling to New Bloomfield
On October 18, the Lady Trojans trailed New Bloomfield 19-13 at halftime before falling 44-30.
“We got into foul trouble early on,” Carroz said. “Going into halftime, New Bloomfield had a six-point lead. The girls never gave up in the second half. We weren’t able to regain the lead.”
Angel scored a team-high nine points while Beamer had eight points and Johnson scored six points.
