The Community R-VI Lady Trojans basketball team made its one final push to this week’s district tournament after splitting a pair of games last week.
The highlight of the two games came in a State Sectional rematch from a year ago with a down Marion County team.
The Lady Trojans held Marion County to three points or less in two quarters and cruised to a 71-23 victory in Philadelphia, Missouri.
“(A) big first half surge gave us a comfortable lead,” said Community R-VI head girls basketball coach Bob Curtis. “Nice to get a win over another school that is in our district going into next week. Eight different Lady Trojans scored.”
Community R-VI did lead 43-11 at halftime and never looked back in the 48-point win.
Samm Jett scored 23 points with three rebounds, two assists, and two steals while Alissa Curtis had 19 points, five rebounds, three steals, two assists, and one block.
Danielle Brooks had 10 points, eight steals, six assists, and two rebounds; Rebecca Hagan added nine points, one rebound, and one assist; Samantha Jackson had four points and four rebounds; Lexus LaGesse added two points, two rebounds, and one assist; Tayler Cope had two points and one rebound; Chelsea Hoyt had four rebounds and two assists; Bethany Schmidt added one assist and one steal; while Danie Jackson had one steal.
The win moved the Lady Trojans record to 17-6.
Loss to Mark Twain
While Senior Night gave the girls basketball team an opportunity to recognize their lone senior Samantha Jackson, the end result was a disappointing one as Community R-VI lost 56-47 to Mark Twain.
“We had an 11 point lead at halftime and just came out of the locker room flat and Mark Twain didn’t,” Bob Curtis said. “We only had three or four field goals in the second half, that was the roughest half of basketball I have witnessed us have all year. We have to erase that game from memory and prepare for districts.”
Samantha Jackson had two rebounds and one assist in her final regular season home game for the Lady Trojans.
“I am proud of our one senior and her progression as an athlete,” Bob Curtis added. “Sam Jackson typically guards the other teams best player and holds them under their season average. She is the kind of player who is all about winning and will do anything for the team to be successful. I am proud to have coached her and enjoyed every minute of it.”
In the game, the Lady Trojans led 11-9 early and later went up 11 points.
Community R-VI made just 18-of-78 shots from the field in the loss.
Mark Twain rallied in the second half for the nine point upset.
Brooks scored 19 points, 10 rebounds, three steals, two blocks, and one assist while Alissa Curtis added 12 points, 10 rebounds, two steals, two assists, and one steal.
Jett added 12 points three steals, two rebounds, and one assist; Danie Jackson had two points, three steals, three rebounds, and two assists; Hoyt had two points, three rebounds, one assist, and one steal; and Hagan had five rebounds and one steal.
