Another year and another 20-win season as the Community R-VI Lady Trojans moved their record to 20-1 overall after crushing Sturgeon, 36-21, last Saturday on Senior Night.
The win also kept the Lady Trojans undefeated at 7-0 in the Central Activities Conference (CAC) as they remain No. 2 in Class 1.
Community R-VI led 24-8 at halftime and held off a late Lady Bulldogs’ charge to cruise to a 15-point win.
“Sturgeon always has a solid game plan of limiting your possessions and causing you to defend for a long time hoping you break down and give up a lay-up,” said Community R-VI head coach Bob Curtis.
“Their style is good for us to show some discipline and take good shots on offense and not waste possessions with bad shots and risky passes. One of the keys to this win is Sadie Hoyt, Deann Brooks, and Delanie Windmann (as they) were so good rebounding the basketball and guarding Sturgeon’s solid post players, holding them to just six combined points when most nights these players combine for around 22 a game. Deann and Sadie stepped up big combining for 20 of our 36. It is hard to beat a good team twice, but we happened to run into Sturgeon in tournaments this year, so this was our fourth meeting, which makes it even tougher.”
For Senior Night, Taren Clark and Delanie Windmann were each honored.
“This was Senior Night for two very special reasons: Senior guard Taren Clark, who has been a defensive stopper and the first player to take a charge to help her team win her entire career,” Curtis noted. “Also, Delanie Windmann who always sets the tone of toughness and physical play for the Lady Trojans and has great hands to catch and finish around the rim. Both will be missed and have made an impact on our program.”
Brooks led the team in the win with 12 points and six rebounds; Natalie Thomas has 10 points, five rebounds, and two assists; Sadie Hoyt added eight points and six rebounds; Windmann and Emma Angel each had two points; and both Shelby Clark and Dalaney Bowers had one point.
