Coming off a disappointing loss to North Callaway in their last contest, Community R-VI head girls basketball coach Bob Curtis knew his Lady Trojans would need to be on the top of their game to knock off the No. 5 team in Class 1 in last Saturday’s Gary Filbert Classic.
Jamestown is a solid basketball team featuring two sets of twins that combined for all of their team’s 42 points against the Lady Trojans in the game.
Fortunately, it came in a losing effort as Coach Curtis’ players responded with an impressive 48-42 win. The Lady Trojans’ defense held Jamestown to just four points in the fourth quarter while the offense made 7-of-10 free throws in the final four minutes.
If both teams advance out of districts and sectionals, they could play again for a trip to the Final Four if the State Chapionshps bracket is similar to the way it was last season.
“It was a big day for the Lady Trojans…” Coach Curtis noted. “…We played Jamestown last year at the Gary Filbert Classic and lost. It was obvious to me at the end of the first quarter the girls did not want a repeat of a year ago. We really controlled the boards and hit our free throws down the stretch to secure the win.”
Community R-VI got off to a fast start taking a 17-12 first quarter lead before entering halftime up by six points.
Jamestown climbed back into the game to tie things at 38-38 heading into the fourth quarter before the Lady Trojans held on late for the victory.
Samm Jett led the team with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds. She also had two assists and one block.
Alissa Curtis also had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds in spite of playing about 11 minutes in the second half with four fouls. She added four assists.
“They both played really well as Samm was double teamed just about everywhere she went and Alissa played most of the game with foul trouble…,” Bob Curtis said.
Chelsea Hoyt scored six points and four assists; Danielle Brooks had five points, two steals, two rebounds, two blocks, and one assist; Rebecca Hagan added four points, three assists, three rebounds, and one steal; and Danie Jackson had two points, three rebounds, and one assist.

North Callaway loss
In the previous loss to North Callaway, the Lady Trojans were outscored 30-18 in the first half before tying the game up after a big third quarter. Unfortunately, they lost the game in the fourth quarter, 55-50 on Courtwarming Night.
Alissa Curtis had 18 points, four rebounds, and one assist; Jett added 16 points, four rebounds, three steals, one block, and one assist; Hoyt had seven points, five assists, five steals, and one rebound; Brooks tallied six points, five steals, two rebounds, and two assists; Jackson added four points, three rebounds, and one steal; Tayler Cope had two points; and Hagan added two assists, one rebound, and one steal.
