Silex’s 3-point shooting was too much to overcome for the Van-Far Lady Indians basketball team during their 53-36 Courtwarming Night loss.
Silex made three 3-pointers to open the game on a 12-0 run. They made 5-of-9 attempts in the win.
Van-Far scored its first three points on a 3-pointer by Jayda Borgmeyer with
“We didn’t come out and play well the first half,” said Van-Far head coach Kelly Orf. “We couldn’t get control of the ball.”
Van-Far’s offense made just 5-of-22 shots from the field in the first half and turned the ball over 14 times to trail 33-14 at halftime. The Lady Indians’ offensive woes continued at the beginning of the second half as they missed their first three shots. A late 3-pointer by Ciara Craven near the buzzer kept Silex’s lead at 22 points.
Van-Far did win the turnover battle as their defense forced Silex into 21 turnovers.
“After the half we came out and played a hard defense and started scoring,” Orf said. “We dug a hole too deep to get out of but I was very proud that the girls didn’t give up  and kept playing till the end.”
Abilene Gatson led Van-Far with seven points, two assists, two rebounds, and one steal while Breanna Strange tallied six points, six rebounds, one assist, and two steals. Borgmeyer had six points, three rebounds, and two assists; Haven Atkinson had four points; Craven added three points, four rebounds, three assists, and two steals; Chevi Windland scored three points; Annaliese Hubert scored two points, three rebounds, and one assist; Renee Nelson scored one point, two rebounds, and one steal; and Kayelee Harrower had two assists, one rebound, and one steal.
Earlier in the week, the Lady Indians lost to Father Tolten, 45-15.
Gatson led the Lady Indians with six points and four rebounds while Strange tallied five points and two rebounds. Johnson scored two points and two rebounds; Hubert had two points and one steal; Craven added two rebounds and two steals; Atkinson tallied four rebounds and one steal; Harrower had three rebounds; Borgmeyer added four rebounds; and Nelson had two rebounds.
“Again we are struggling to score,” Orf said. “The girls have been playing good defense, but we just came seem to put points on the board. This is something we have been working on diligently in practice every day.”
