Van-Far’s Jayle Jennings makes her move up the court against Community R-VI.

The Van-Far girls basketball team picked up a big EMO Conference victory last week when the Lady Indians traveled to Silex and left with a 49-24 victory.
Van-Far jumped out to an 11-2 first quarter lead before increasing their edge to 18 points at halftime. The Lady Indians outscored the Lady Owls 20-13 in the second half.
“We moved the ball well against Silex and pushed it down the floor, which allowed us to get some easy baskets,” said Van-Far head coach Kelly Borchert.
“Defensively, we played good help defense.”
Reaghan Case paced the Lady Indians with 14 points, three rebounds, and one steal while Katie Elzea tallied 10 points, two rebounds, two assists, and one steal.
Jayle Jennings had nine points, eights assists, four rebounds, and two steals; Jordan Garner had six points, seven rebounds, and one assist; Morgan McDowell had five points and one assist; Alivia Graddy had four points, four rebounds, one steal, and one assist; Gina Clausen had four rebounds and two steals; Annalynn Culwell had one steal and one assist; and Alyse Jensen had one steal.
In a match-up with rival Community R-VI in a packed gym, the Lady Indians didn’t have the same success defensively as they lost 61-32 to the Lady Trojans. It was an emotional night as the Lady Indians’ community mourned the loss of a player’s mom, Felicity Goodpasture-Culwell, while also standing up to cancer with a “Shannon Strong” event for Annalynn Culwell’s father Shannon Culwell, Jr.
Turnovers plagued the Lady Indians as Van-Far trailed 22-11 at the end of the first quarter.
Community R-VI led 40-22 at halftime before holding on for the 29-point win.
“The R-VI game, we didn’t take care of the ball as well and our defense wasn’t the best,” Borchert said. “We gave up too many second chance shots…The difference in the win against Silex and the loss to R-VI was our help defense and turnovers.”
In the loss, Jennings had 13 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Case scored nine points; Garner had seven points and two rebounds; McDowell had three points and one rebound; Alex Connaway tallied two steals, one rebound, and one assist; both Clausen and Jensen had three rebounds; and Vanessa Martinez had two rebounds.
