Katherine Hartgraves, 62, died peacefully on January 9, 2013, surrounded by her family; after a courageously fought, 4-year battle with Endometrial Cancer.

Kathy is survived by her loving husband of 33 years, Johnnie Hartgraves. She is further survived by her beloved step-daughters, Celesta Hartgraves (John Busby), Natalie Gomez (Mark); and her cherished grandchildren, Hannah and Haden Gomez. Kathy was the treasured big sister to Mark Pendleton (MaryEllen), Susan Somers (Michael), and Paul Pendleton (Michelle Smith). She was a devoted aunt to Matthew Pendleton (Ann Marie), Nathan Pendleton, Paul Somers, Peter Somers, and Adam Somers. Kathy also leaves behind a lifetime of adored friends, cousins, fellow teachers, and students. Kathy was a devoted Special Ed Teacher for six years in Sullivan, Mo., and 22 years in Vandalia, Mo.

Kathy never missed a birthday or special event in the lives of the many people she loved. In addition, Kathy kept a collection of over 1,000 elephants (many given to her by her students, family and friends). She was an avid gardener, enjoyed collecting and reading mystery novels, doing jigsaw puzzles, and playing lottery scratch tickets.

Her greatest joy was attending events with John that involved her cherished grandchildren and beloved nephews. Kathy loved all animals but especially her precious friends/dogs Belle and Sammy. The family would like to thank her doctors, nurses, and staff of 9W at Cox South, Home Parenteral Services and Hulston Cancer Center for the wonderful care and support they gave Kathy, John, and the family.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, January 12, 2013, at 3 PM, in Walnut Lawn Funeral Home, 2001 W. Walnut Lawn, Springfield, Mo.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations made in Kathy’s name to the CoxHealth Foundation for Cancer-3525 S. National Springfield, Mo. 65807, or C.A.R.E. Animal Rescue, P.O. Box 215 Aurora, Mo. 65605.
