The Van-Far/Community R-VI Junior High football coaching staff was really proud of their players on September 15 as their team held on for a big 26-24 win over Wright City.
The Indians led 26-8 entering the fourth quarter before allowing two late scores with a few younger players getting some playing time.
“What a great game to coach, the weather was perfect for a great football game,” said Van-Far/Community R-VI coach Scott Eickhoff. “I thought we managed the clock well in the first week and we improved immensely during this game…That time (with younger players in the game late) is important for our players and our program. I was very impressed with the offensive line and the push they got throughout the game. Overall a very successful night…”
Garrett Schmidt led the Indians with 15 carriers for 108 yards. Tony Garland had 12 carries for 78 yards and one touchdown. Bryson Lay added six carries for 36 yards and had one interception return for 72 yards on defense. Dayton Sanders had four carries for 20 yards and two touchdowns. Jake Haines had eight carries for 35 yards and one touchdown while Darius Starks added two carries for 17 yards.
Falling to Highland
On September 8, the Indians dropped a tough game to Highland, 24-8.
“We learned a lot, the boys fought hard to the very end,” Eickhoff said. “It was the first time all year we got to go against a full team. The team has been going mostly against air. So for us to come out and lose by two scores the way we did I was proud of the boys.”
Garland finished with seven carries for 48 yards and one touchdown while Schmidt had 10 carries for 48 yards.
Lay tallied six carries for 36 yards, Haines had eight carries for 25 yards, and Starks added two carries for 10 yards.
