JAMES “JIM” DONALD GABBETT

James “Jim” Donald Gabbett, 96, of Vandalia, died at 3 a.m. on Friday, April 25, 2014, at the Tri County Care Center in Vandalia.
There will be a private funeral service held for the family. Arrangements are being handled by Grand View Funeral Home in Hannibal. Burial will follow at Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal.
Jim was born on April 26, 1917, in Delavan, Ill. He was the son of William and Delilah Wein Gabbett.
He married Helen Melrose Shaffer on Nov. 2, 1940, in St. Louis. They were married for forty-four years. He was a devoted and loving husband, and when Helen suffered from a stroke, he continued to faithfully love and care for her until her death in 1984.
In addition to caring for Helen, Jim also lovingly cared for his mother, sister and nephew in their time of need.
Jim was a life-long farmer, and he worked hard on his farm until he retired at age 72. After retiring he moved into Vandalia.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Helen; two brothers, Richard and Delmar; a sister, Theresa Bowers and a son, William Gabbett.
He is survived by his two daughters, Bette (Bill) Blue, of Vandalia, and Donna (James) Dameron, of Curryville; a very special friend, Mrs. Eula Allee, of Springfield, Ill; three grandchildren, Pam (Rick) Smith, Penny (Tim) Bealmear and James (Kara) Dameron; seven great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; several nieces and nephews; and a very special dog, “Buddy”.
Jim will be greatly missed by his friends and family.
