The 65th anniversary of Constitution Week was celebrated Sept. 17-23 this past week to honor the adoption of the U.S. Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787.
Local members of the Vandalia Chapter of the National Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Joy Davis and Ann Carter, rang the bell at the First Presbyterian Church at 3 p.m. Sept. 17, 2020.
The bell was rung 13 times in honor of the original 13 states and the Constitution.
DAR first passed a resolution designating Constitution Week in 1955 and petitioned Congress to make it official. President Eisenhower signed it into law in 1956.
One of the goals of DAR is to teach the public about historical events.
