Verlyn Johnson breaks loose for a big gain against Montgomery County.

The Van-Far/Community R-VI football team trailed 30-0 with 1:09 still left in the first quarter on Senior Night against a much improved Montgomery County squad last Friday.
The Wildcats had touchdown plays of 82 yards, five yards, and 69 yards to quickly take the lead.
The Indians responded however with three straight scores to cut the lead to 10.
Unfortunately, they were unable to maintain that momentum as they lost 60-20.
Their defense allowed 458 yards passing and 236 yards on the ground for 694 total yards of offense.
“I felt like we went into halftime with a little bit of energy after being down,” said Indians’ head coach Kevin Baldwin.
Baldwin also noted that a late Wildcats’ touchdown with 5.7 seconds left in the first half really hurt his team’s momentum, though they were only down by two scores.
During the Indians’ brief rally, Verlyn Johnson had a 50-yard touchdown run and a six yard touchdown run.
Bryson Lay then intercepted a Wildcats’ pass on the one yard line and returned it 59 yards to the Montgomery County 40.
After Verdell Johnson completed a 36-yard pass to Blake Crider on a trick play, Eric Hombs scored on a four yard touchdown run to make the score 30-20 at the time.
Verlyn Johnson finished the game with 10 carries for 104 yards and two touchdowns.
While Hombs only completed 4-of-13 passes for seven yards and two interceptions, he did add 13 carries for 44 yards and one touchdown in the loss.
