The new Dollar General Market being constructed at the edge of town on Hwy 54 continues toward completion. Construction workers were busy on Saturday putting up the exterior walls of the new facility.
Vandalia City Administrator Darren Berry said that this location will be larger than the existing one located at 1415 West Hwy. 54.
“This new store will have a larger footprint than the current one has,” said Berry. “They will also be making available a lot more grocery items such as meats, fresh produce and other grocery items. I have personally looked at the plans for the layout and can say that there will definitely be more room for additional products at this site,” he added.
Dollar General has been busy adding new locations in numerous states in the past year. Locally, a new store was opened in Laddonia, Mo., last year. On Jan. 28, 2023, the company celebrated the grand opening of its 19,000th store location in Joplin, Mo. Dollar General Chief Executive Officer Jeff Owen said that there are now more than 6,000 Dollar General employees in Missouri.
“Since opening our first Missouri store in 1973, Dollar General has a longstanding history in the state and proudly employs more than 6,000 Missourians through our stores, distribution center and Private Fleet. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the entire Dollar General family whose dedication to our customers helped us to reach this milestone,” said Owens.
Although there is no official date set for the grand opening of the new location, Berry said that he has heard that the company was hoping to complete the construction of the building sometime soon.
“I have heard that the goal for closing up the project was spring or early summer,” said Berry. “I know that once they get the enclosure finished these building projects seem to go really fast. As far as the existing location is concerned, I am under the impression that Dollar General intends to continue operating it after the new one opens. I was told that they feel there is enough traffic here to support two locations within the city limits of Vandalia,” he added.
