Throughout the Capital Campaign for the Eastern Missouri Family YMCA, the focus has been on securing monetary donations for the overall project. Phase I focused on building the YMCA from ground up. The ongoing Phase II campaign is focusing on the finishing touches for the YMCA, such as flooring, operating, necessary furnishings, and endowment.
Equally as important in fundraising efforts are the “in-kind” donations. By definition, gifts in kind, also referred to as “in-kind” donations, is a charitable giving in which, instead of giving money to buy needed goods and services, the goods and services themselves are given.
For example, someone receives a new microwave as a Christmas gift due to a kitchen remodel. Their current microwave is in good working condition, but now needs a new home. The donation of the gently used microwave to the YMCA would be an “in-kind” donation. A monetary value is assigned and the donation is recorded as an “in-kind” donation.
Another example would be, a community member is considering a donation, but prefers to give specifically to a tangible item. The donor would contact the Y for a list of needs, purchase the items, and then donate those items to the Y.
Through the generosity of community support, the following “in-kind” donations have already been made to the YMCA: washer, dryer, stove/oven, cooler/refrigerator, freezer, and office supplies. Remember a previous article in which Van-Far graduates donated paint, flooring, flooring adhesive, etc. to the YMCA!
Due to commercial and usage requirements on cardio equipment (treadmills, elliptical machines, etc.), the YMCA will purchase or lease specific equipment for the wellness center. “In-kind” donations of cardio equipment are not accepted; however, donations can be specified for the purchase of additional cardio equipment.
As we near the opening of the YMCA, “in-kind” gift ideas on our wish list include a microwave, double pot coffee maker, ladders, banquet tables and chairs, Child Watch area rugs, storage cubbies and toys, sandwich board signs, easels, shelving units, a laminator, tool set, wall mountable televisions, and a DVD player, to name a few.
