This year’s Van-Far golf program has a new coach and has enough golfers to earn team points with the goal of qualifying as a squad to state sectionals followed by a state championships appearance. They also have their sites on an EMO Conference title.
The Indians are led by returning All-EMO Conference golfer Brayden Christian. Christian, a junior, placed fourth in last year’s EMO Conference match.
Joining him will be returning sophomores Jayson Orr and Ethan Winders.
Freshmen players include Matt Dunn, Rylee Hanson, Zane Allen, and Trevor Lower.
Van-Far head coach Alex Cucciarre said he’s hoping to see his golfers obtain a 45-50 average individually.
He’s also encouraged by how the team has been close and that will help them reach their goals this season.
“The first thing I’ve noticed is their camaraderie,” Cucciarre said. “These guys are supportive of each other. They have friendly competition, pushing them as a team this year…They are helping each other out, which is nice. I’ve seen some pretty good scores early.”
Cucciarre is taking over the program after Joe Basinger left the district and is now at Montgomery County.
Cucciarre was a four-year golfer on a JV squad for a strong golf program at VanWert High School in Ohio.
He said he’s enjoyed getting back out on the links.
“It’s great to see the guys come out and be compassionate about it,” he noted. “They’ve set great goals and all are very receptive working on their form. It’s been a blast so far.”
Van-Far’s first of two home matches at the Vandalia Country Club will be held at 4 p.m. on March 30 featuring Palmyra and Monroe City.
