Gerald J. Oakes, loving husband and dad, entered into eternity on Saturday, May 24, 2014. He was born on Dec. 19, 1930 and married Florence Troesser on January 16, 1954.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Florence; four children, Mike Oakes and wife Nancy, of Mexico; Mary Oakes and Darin Stone, of Hallsville/Mexico; Tim Oakes and wife Beth, of Mexico; and Jennifer Martin and husband Scott, of Vandalia; five grandchildren, Jessica Riechers and husband Aaron, of Rush Hill; William Oakes, of Mexico; Brandon Oakes, of Columbia; Tera Oakes, of Mexico; and Justin Durham, of Vandalia; seven great-grandchildren, Charley Jo Riechers, Clayton Riechers, William Oakes, Preston Fohey, Jacob Oakes, Carter Riechers, and T.J. Scott.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Viola Oakes; one brother, James Oakes; one son, Kevin Oakes; and one grandson, Joshua Oakes.
Gerald retired from Union Electric 1994 after 40 years of service.
He was also employed part-time at Westlakes Hardware for 28 years. Mr. Oakes was a member of St. Brendan Catholic Church and a 47 year member of the Knights of Columbus.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 28, from 4-8 p.m. at Arnold Funeral Home with a rosary recited at 8 p.m.
A Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Brendan Catholic Church with Fr. Mark Porterfield officiating.
Burial with military honors will be in St. Brendan Cemetery.
