Through two quarters of their game against rival Silex on the Lady Owls’ home court, the Van-Far Lady Indians appeared ready to pick up their first EMO Conference victory of the season. The Lady Indians missed critical free throws before halftime and trailed 21-20 before Silex junior Natalie Fleming took over the game. Fleming scored her 1,000th career point during the Lady Owls 57-45 victory and finished with a game-high 32 points.
“Like our last game we had a focal point and she was our focal point,” said Van-Far head coach Blake Logan.
Meanwhile, Van-Far point guard Kasey Gatson led the Lady Indians with 30 points and six rebounds in spite of picking up three early fouls.
“She’s a senior with a lot of experience and it shows,” Logan said. “Their throwing her all the pressure and she had only two turnovers and that says a lot…We need some others to step up and be more aggressive on the offensive end.”
Foul trouble is ultimately what hurt Van-Far in the loss.
“We were kind of handcuffed the whole second half defensively and they were exploiting that,” Logan said. “We were getting one shot and that was it. We need to start being more aggressive getting offensive rebounds and need to have a nose for the ball.”
MaKenzie Wallace finished with 10 points; Jenise Johnson had two points and 15 rebounds; Jaselle Brookins added two points and seven rebounds.
