The Vandalia Area Fair held its monthly meeting on November 15, 2012.  Some upcoming events were put on the schedule.

On Thanksgiving evening, the annual Ben Salmon Christmas Display opened. The drive-thru display will be open nightly from 5-10 p.m. through New Years day. The drive-thru at the Vandalia Fairgrounds displays some of the original art work of Benjamin Louis Salmon, “The Sign Man” who passed away in 2006 at the age of 92. In 1936, Ben made his first Christmas display, made mostly of wood and cardboard. It was a Santa Claus house with elves that were placed on his front porch with Santa’s sleigh and reindeer on his rooftop. As the years passed, he always had a display for all to see. In 1975 his Christmas display stretched four lots long, depicting time from Christ’s birth to his ascension.

New this year is the Santa Train made by Salmon that was donated to the Fairboard. Some portions of the display have been repaired over the years, and the fair is trying to preserve and restore whenever possible. Pieces have been replaced that were not salvageable.

The Fairboard is also hosting a new event this year to the Ben Salmon Christmas display. On December 9 they will be hosting “A Ben Salmon Christmas for the Angels” from 5-7 p.m.

Mrs. Claus will be visiting the fairgrounds that evening. Adults and children will be able to enjoy the work of Ben Salmon, enjoy free holiday tattoos, photos with Ms. Claus, hot chocolate and cookies, along with registering to win free holiday prizes. The Fairboard will be accepting monetary donations and toy’s that evening at the gate to be donated to the Vandalia Fire Department Angel Tree.

The fair has set the date of the annual Auction and Fish Fry to Saturday, February 9. Board members are selling raffle tickets now for a Benelli Supernova 12 gauge shotgun. Winner will be announced at the Auction.

The 2012-2013 Vandalia Area Fair Board members are: President Jeff Carlyle, Vice-President Teresa Stuart, Treasurer Nancy Jennings, Co-Treasurer Mary Jones, Secretary Mickey Mink, Connie and Jim Boyd, Mike Reynolds, Michael Evans, Tom Culwell, Rick Goodhart, Bobby Davis, Bob Giltner, Shelia Shramek, Larry and Nancy Nation, Mike Allen, Jordan Epperson, Kelly Mink, Merle and Renee James, Sam Chatman, Ashley Boyd, Danny Wood, Jordyn Hull, Sherry Phillips, and Brad Sunday.
