Vandalia Playcare is currently enjoying its 46th year of serving Vandalia area families.
While the not-for-profit group has been successful in working with kids ages 3-5, Playcare officials wish they could serve more families.
Currently, there are just four students enrolled in the morning and six students in the afternoon. Vandalia Playcare’s capacity for each session is 10 students.
Before last year, Playcare was at the maximum level of students. Just 10 years earlier, Playcare had two teachers with about 20 students.
“We’re getting close to being 50 years old, we’re trying to make it to 50,” said Felicity Goodpasture-Culwell. “…(Playcare) just gives kids the opportunity to be with kids their own age and learn how to be in a learning environment.”
Playcare’s vision is get area students ages 3-5 ready for kindergarten.
When attending Playcare, students will learn how to write their names, learn their address, learn simple words, learn their telephone number, learn their alphabet, and more.
One main requirement for kids in the program is they are potty trained.
Registrations are accepted for the morning class that meets 8-11 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. The cost is $60 a month or about $5/day. The morning class is for 3 and 4 year olds.
In the afternoon session set for 4-5 year olds, students meet from 12:30-3:30 p.m. The cost is $65 a month.
The Vandalia Playcare director is Stacey Caldwell.
“They’ll learn whatever they need to know to go into Kindergarten and plus some,” Goodpasture-Culwell added.
“We work with the school and their curriculum on what they want the kindergartners to know.”
