For the first time in the history of the boys basketball program, the Community R-VI Trojans won the EMO Conference Championship this past weekend after knocking off Silex.
The win improved their record to 7-2 in the EMO, giving them a share of the title with Clopton and Elsberry. The Trojans joined the conference in 2006-2007, the same year the Lady Trojans won their conference title.
“It amazes me the quality of kids what we have,” said Community R-VI head coach Kenneth Jett. “After that game Friday night (a loss to Bowling Green), I was worried about us getting ready for Saturday. These guys bounce back quick, especially since we played the game early in the afternoon. They were really focused when we got there.”
In the win over Silex, the Trojans trailed the Owls on their Senior Night and Pink Out game at the end of the first quarter.
The Trojans responded by outscoring Silex 14-3 in the second quarter to take a 26-16 halftime lead.
Community R-VI maintained their lead and won 52-41.
Clay Thebeau scored a team-high 20 points. Conner Brooks scored 16 points and Lane Thebeau added 11 points.
On Friday night, the Trojans fell to Bowling Green in the final minute of the game, 50-48. A win over the Bobcats and a win over the Owls would have given the Trojans the outright EMO Conference title.
The Trojans jumped out to a 15-5 first quarter lead and extended it to 17 points at halftime.
Community R-VI led by 14 heading into the fourth quarter before Bowling Green’s dominance on the boards caught up to them in a two point loss. The Trojans only had three free throw shots in the game.
“It was a tough way to get our second conference loss,” Jett said.
Brooks scored a team-high 20 points and Lane Thebeau added nine points.
On Senior Night, Marion County’s deadly 3-point shooting and an injury to Brooks, who missed the game with a broken nose, was too much for the Trojans to overcome.
The Mustangs made 8-of-13 3-point shots and never trailed in a 58-47 victory.
“We started slowly,” Jett said. “Seemed we were a step slow all night long and Marion County took advantage of it.”
If both teams win districts, they could face one another again in sectionals.
The Trojans made just 5-of-25 shots from the field in the first while Marion County made five 3-pointers to take a 29-16 lead.
Kaleb Harris converted a 3-point play in the third quarter and scored six points in the fourth but it wasn’t enough in the nine point loss.
Harris scored seven points and added nine rebounds and two steals. Lane Thebeau had 10 points, two rebounds, two blocks, and one steal; Clay Thebeau added nine points, four steals, three rebounds, three assists, and one block; Kyle Curtis tallied 12 points, eight rebounds, and one steal; Shane Myers had four points, two steals, and one rebound; Anthony Fairchild chipped in three points and one rebound; and Doug Davenport had four rebounds, one steal, and one assist.
The Trojans helped their chances at winning an EMO Conference title when they traveled to Montgomery County and dominated the Wildcats, 73-59.
“It was a big conference game for us,” Jett said. “The boys came out and ready to play. Our defense was outstanding all night long.”
The Trojans jumped out to a 16-8 first quarter lead before extending their edge to 16 points at halftime.
Community R-VI held on late for a 14-point victory to improve their conference record at the time to 6-1.
Brooks scored a team-high 21 points. Lane Thebeau had 18 points; Clay Thebeau scored 16 points; Harris tallied nine points and eight rebounds; Curtis scored four points with 13 rebounds; and Myers had five points.
Two Saturdays ago, Community R-VI traveled to Moberly Area Community College to take on a competitive Westran team.
The Trojans jumped out to a 22-6 first quarter lead before being outscored 50-36 in the final three quarters.
In overtime, Brooks made all four free throws to help the Trojans seal a 58-56 victory.
Both Brooks and Harris led Community R-VI with 13 points.
Clay Thebeau had 12 points while Curtis had a double-double of 10 points and 13 rebounds.
