Dollar Tree Inc. has confirmed that it is opening a new Dollar Tree and Family Dollar “Combo” store in Vandalia this summer.

The 10,517-square-foot store will be located at 910 W. Hwy. 54, and is currently scheduled to open in late June 2021.

“Dollar Tree and Family Dollar continue to grow, and we are proud to be part of the Vandalia community,” said Kayleigh M. Painter, investor and media relations manager.

Combo stores are being opened in small towns with populations of 3,000 to 4,000. A store of this size typically employs six to 10 associates. Jobs opportunities will be announced closer to the store’s opening.

Ron Martin, Agustin Lopez, Dave Atherton, Tim Hunter and Kyle Rice of RJL Construction are fixing the roof, walls and floor among other renovations. RJL Construction is working to renovate the building at 910 W. Hwy. 54 so it can be turned over to Family Dollar by May 1 for final construction of a “combo” store by late June.

These are markets where the Company would traditionally not open a Dollar Tree store alone.

The Family Dollar section of the store will offer an assortment of products, including frozen and refrigerated food, beauty products, household products, pet food, diapers, electronics, hardware, automotive supplies and apparel.

The Dollar Tree section will have more than 4,000 items for $1 each, including balloons, party supplies, Hallmark greeting cards, seasonal décor, holiday gifts, toys, school supplies and DIY crafts.

Dollar Tree operates 15,685 stores in the United States and Canada but currently only about 50 combination stores. It opened its first combo store in late 2019, followed by two additional test stores in early 2020. From July to December 2020, it opened 32 more.

The combo stores are delivering a same-store sales lift of greater than 20% on average compared to Family Dollar, according to the company’s most recent earnings report.

“We are extremely pleased with our customers’ response to the new combination store concept,” said Michael Witynski, president and CEO. “As I have said in the past, we will continue to refine our strategic store formats so that we are able to better serve customers, while improving store productivity, margins and returns.”
