For the past two weeks, area fast food restaurants and convenience stores have reported receiving counterfeit money.
The money is usually a $20 bill, although on occasion there has been a smaller denomination.
The bills have been identified because they are missing some of the security features, are cut incorrectly, or the paper is recognized as being the wrong type.
In a few of the incidents, the businesses have been able to identify the person who passed the bill.
Mexico Public Safety is currently investigating the incidents in attempts to identify the source.
Businesses are encouraged to review ways to identify counterfeit money with their employees.
Anyone with information about this or any other crime is asked to call Crunstiooers at 800-392-TIPS or 800-392-8477, or Mexico Public Safety at 573-473-5800 or 573-581-2100.
