In a heartwarming display of community essence, the Sons of Light, Service and Supply Co-op, and the Vandalia Area Chamber of Commerce joined forces to raise funds for a significant project: the installation of a 60-foot flagpole in the center of downtown Vandalia. This initiative aims to honor the late Mike Culwell, a beloved local figure known for his dedication to the community.

Mike Culwell was a pillar of the Vandalia community, known for his unwavering support and contributions to various local causes. His legacy of service and kindness left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.

As the American flag flew high over the crowd, Mike would lead the veterans in the Vandalia Prairie Days parade on his motorcycle along with his brothers from the Sons of Light. To commemorate his life and contributions, the community decided to erect a flagpole that would stand as a symbol of unity, patriotism, and the enduring spirit of Vandalia.

The Sons of Light, a local organization dedicated to community service, partnered with Service and Supply Co-op spearheading a fundraiser for the project and thanks to the generosity of Vandalia residents and local businesses, the fundraising campaign quickly gained momentum. Donations poured in from all corners of the community, reflecting the high regard in which Culwell was held. The collaborative effort not only brought in the required funds but also strengthened the bonds among community members.

The flagpole was installed on Aug. 9. A dedication ceremony is planned, where community members will gather to celebrate Culwell’s life and legacy at the start of Prairie Days. The event will feature Lori Culwell, Mike’s wife, who will raise the flag, followed by a moment of silence to honor Mike’s memory.

The flagpole will serve as a lasting tribute to Mike Culwell, reminding future generations of his contributions and the importance of community spirit. It will also stand as a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared purpose.

The Sons of Light, Service and Supply Co-op, the City of Vandalia and the Vandalia Area Chamber of Commerce have shown that through collaboration and dedication, a community can create meaningful and lasting tributes to those who have made a difference. The flagpole in downtown Vandalia should not only honor Culwell but should also inspire others to continue his legacy of service and kindness.
