The Community R-VI boys basketball team opened its season last Friday night in Sturgeon and appeared ready for a win up four with four minutes left in the game.
Unfortunately, the Trojans were unable to put the game away in a 52-43 loss.
Community R-VI struggled offensively in the first half managing to score just nine points in each of the first two quarters.
Cordell Hollensteiner scored five points in the first quarter while Anthony Fairchild paced the Trojans with seven points in the second quarter as Community R-VI trailed Sturgeon 22-18 at halftime.
Hollensteiner, who made six 3-pointers in the game, hit four of them in the third quarter to help the Trojans take a two point lead heading into the final frame.
Though Gatlin Curtis added a late 3-pointer, Sturgeon won the game from the free throw line late making 6-of-12 shots in the win.
Sturgeon had four players score in double digits.
Hollensteiner finished with a game-high 20 points. Fairchild added nine points, Matt Gastler scored six points, Curtis had five points, and Bobby Jett scored three points.
“Looking for that team chemistry,” Ken Jett noted. “…Matt Gastler and Anthony Fairchild (had a) good night on the boards.”
