Community R-VI boys basketball coach Ken Jett knew his team would be tested at home last week in their home opener against a much improved Wellsville team. The Trojans had several players who didn’t have a lot of previous starting varsity experience.
The Tigers jumped out to a 25-1 first quarter lead and held on late for the 72-53 win.
In the first half, the Trojans trailed 43-20 as Community R-VI struggled to stop the Wellsville attack.
Community R-VI outscored the Tigers 23-15 in the fourth quarter but were unable to complete the rally.
The Trojans made just 17-of-42 shots from the field and 8-of-17 3-point attempts in the loss.
Wellsville won the game after making 27-of-64 shots from the field and scoring 19 second-chance points.
Bobby Jett led Community R-VI with a team-high 21 points after making 5-of-9 3-pointers.
Community R-VI Trojans’ senior Anthony Fairchild added a near double-double with eight points, eight rebounds, and two steals while Cordell Hollensteiner had seven points.
Gage Graves had seven points, one rebound, one assist, and one steal; Matt Gastler tallied six points, four rebounds, and two blocks; while Jamie Householder scored four points with three rebounds and one steal.
