The Community R-VI School District is set to host next week’s Class 1, District 10 Tournament as seven other schools will be visiting Laddonia for annual basketball contests February 19-24.
As one of two larger schools in a district featuring mostly smaller schools, Community R-VI gets the opportunity to host for the first time since they did a few years ago when games were played at Moberly Area Community College.
“It will be fun (to host),” said Community R-VI head boys basketball coach and athletic director Matt Thomas. “It’s been a lot of work.”
Thomas said one major consideration is the district trying to make sure parking accessibility is there for fans coming into the district to attend the postseason contests.
He said the focus is on parking and where to put the busses.
One consideration may be to make the front door a pass gate only as the district now has parking up front, something it did not have available to them in the past.
Thomas noted that in spite of not having the largest gym, some things will be considered to help ensure there is plenty of room come game time for the fans visiting Laddonia.
There will also be a hospitality room for bus drivers, administrators, and the coaches as well.
Though there is a lot of work involved in hosting districts, the school is thankful to give its players an opportunity to compete on its home floor during a winner-takes-all tournament.
“It’s always nice to play games on your home floor,” Thomas noted.
“You don’t have to travel every night. If there’s a game you need to watch, you can stay and watch it. You’re not on the road every night. I always think it’s an advantage for teams to have the same locker room (etc.).”
The tournament brackets are on the window banner in the B-section of this issue.
Schools set to compete in districts includes Community R-VI, Chamois, Fulton (St. Albans), Madison, Wellsville, Missouri School for the Deaf, North Shelby, and Marion County.
