The Community R-VI Middle School girls basketball team continued its dominant season last week after picking up four more wins. They ended the stretch by winning the Community R-VI Tournament title.
In the championship game against North Callaway, the Lady Trojans held a slim 11-7 first quarter lead before outscoring the Lady Thunderbirds 14-7 before halftime to go up by 14 points.
The Lady Trojans dominated North Callaway in the second half and cruised to a 52-29 victory.
“It is difficult to beat a team twice,” said Community R-VI head coach Stacie Carroz. “The first quarter was back and forth between the two teams. We began to pull away in the second quarter, outscoring North Callaway by 10. We finished strong in the second half, and as a result, we took first place in our tournament.”
Sarah Angel had 15 points and Alexis Welch added 14 points. Shelby Clark scored seven; Jenna Eikel had six; both Kayla Jett and Lachlan Elsey added four; and Brynna Beamer scored two points.
Before the big win, the Lady Trojans led Wellsville-Middletown 18-1 at the end of the first quarter before blowing out the Lady Tigers, 38-3.
Clark had 11 points; Angel scored eight points; Welch had seven points; Elsey scored five points; Ivy Hays added three points; and both Eikel and Jett scored two points.
In the first game of the tournament, the Lady Trojans played Van-Far for the second time in four days. Van-Far closed the gap to just one point at halftime after the Lady Trojans did lead by nine at the end of the first quarter.
Angel and Welch had five steals in the third quarter to help give the Lady Trojans a 10-point lead.
Community R-VI outscored Van-Far 14-1 in the quarter before cruising late to a 34-21 win.
Welch had 10 points; Angel scored nine points; Clark had six points; Elsey added four points; Eikel scored three points; and both Jett and Hays had one point.
The Lady Trojans opened the week with an impressive 53-10 win over Van-Far.
Community R-VI led 21-8 at halftime before outscoring Van-Far 32-2 in the second half.
Welch scored 12 points; Jett added 11 points; Beamer had nine points; both Angel and Elsey had eight points; and Clark scored five points.
