The Community R-VI Lady Trojans entered their Class 1 State Sectional game against Marion County with a lot of confidence.
The girls basketball team had just defeated state-finalist Chamois to win a district title.
They were also playing an experienced Lady Mustangs team they upset a couple of weeks earlier after rallying in the final minute for the victory.
In the rematch at Sturgeon High School, the Lady Trojans led by three with two minutes remaining in the game. They were still in front with :57 seconds left when the Lady Mustangs took advantage of the Lady Trojans’ missed free throws to win the game, 51-48.
“We missed some key free throws down the stretch and made some poor decisions up three with about two minutes to go,” said Community R-VI head girls basketball coach Bob Curtis.
Marion County jumped out to an early 12-6 first quarter lead before the Lady Trojans outscored them 14-10 before halftime.
The Lady Trojans entered the fourth quarter trailing by five points before putting a run together to take the lead.
Unfortunately, they made just 12-of-20 free throws in the game and Marion County won by three points.
Danielle Brooks sparked the Lady Trojans comeback by scoring 14 of her 17 points in the second half. Brooks also had 10 rebounds, five steals, and four assists.
Samm Jett finished with a team-high 18 points.
Emmalee McCoskey had seven points and 16 rebounds.
Though the Lady Trojans’ season came to an end, Curtis said he was extremely proud of his team’s great season.
“It was a great season and I am very proud of all the girls have accomplished,” Curtis added. “Nineteen wins is one shy of tying the school record of 20 wins. These girls had an amazing season have a lot to be proud of. It was great to see so friends and family out to support the girls and boys in what was a history making night with both teams playing in sectionals.”
Community R-VI finished their season with a 19-9 record.
