The Community R-VI golf team opened the 2013 season by shooting a new team low score of 203 in a tri-match at Mosswood Meadows Golf Course in Montgomery City on Thursday, April 4. The Trojans took second after beating Monroe City by 31 strokes. Louisiana won with a 159 as the Bulldogs took fifth at state last year with four of the same golfers returning.
“This should’ve been our sixth match of the season, but with the bad weather, it was our first,” said Community R-VI head golf coach Vicki Briggs. “Because of the poor weather, our team has been very limited with outdoor practice. I think as the rust works off and with more play, we are going to see scores drop quickly. Nonetheless, it was a nice beginning for us.”
Caleb Bertels and Chris Wieberg each led the Trojans with solid rounds after each shot a 49. Treyton Kobush shot a 52, Sean Wilson had a 53, Bryan Allen shot a 66, Trever Hoyt shot a 67, and Alex Becker had a 68.
On Monday, the Trojans represented their school well in the Palmyra Tournament after finishing third in a 10-team field. They shot a 384, finishing behind Tolton’s 340 and Mexico’s 363.
Bertels set a new team individual low for nine holes and 18 holes during the 18-hole event. He shot a 41 on the front nine and a 44 on the back nine to lead the squad with an 85. He helped the team break 200 as a team on the front and back nine, which has been one of their goals.
Wilson shot a personal best 18-hole 96 after a 50 on the front nine and a 46 on the back nine. Wieberg also shot a personal best with a 44 on the front nine before struggling on the back nine with a 54 for a 98.
Kobush shot a 53 and 51 for a 104 while Hoyt shot a 66 and a 61 for a 129.
“The team continues to improve and will go back now and really work on short game and putting and cleaning up the ‘silly’ mistakes,” Briggs said.
