The Community R-VI boys basketball team lost their season opener last year to the Mark Twain Tigers, 59-51. This season, the Trojans and new coach Kenneth Jett changed things this year by winning the season opener against Sturgeon 54-50 on the Bulldogs’ home court on Tuesday, November 26.
In the first quarter, the Trojans scored 12 points to take an early lead.
The Bulldogs got off to a slow start, but were able to stay within six.
Both of the teams offensive units warmed up in the second.
While the Trojans put up nine points, the Bulldogs rallied to score 15 points to tie the game.
In the third quarter, the Trojans scored 13 points to regain the lead, 34-28. The Bulldogs tried to mount a comeback in the fourth by scoring 22 points.
However, the Trojans added 20 points of their own to secure their first win of the season.
Leading scorer was Conner Brooks who made four 3-pointers for a total of 21 points.
Lane Thebeau scored 14 points and Clay Thebeau scored 13 points. Anthony Fairchild, Caleb Harris, and Shane Myers scored two points each.
The Trojans were 18-for-28 from the free throw line.
“We were able to control the tempo, kept our turnovers down, and went to free throw line 22 times in fourth quarter. Conner Brooks came up big with four 3’s, set up by them trying to contain Clay and Lane Thebeau. Anthony Fairchild was solid on defense all night. Caleb Harris was our vocal leader and without him we wouldn’t have won this game. He did all the little things stats don’t show,” said head coach Kenneth Jett.
