Community R-VI baseball head coach Michael Boedeker is counting on his pitching crew to help his squad lead another successful season this year. The Trojans’ 9-8 record on the 2012 season was the best for the team in more than five years.
“We hope to continue to improve and look forward to getting started,” Boedeker said.
The Trojans have seven returning starters in the line up after graduating Austin Layman, Brennan Wells, Cameron Brooks, and Tyler Mays.
“Anytime you lose individuals who you considered leaders, it’s tough, but I believe we have guys on this roster who will step up and fill that role,” Boedeker said. “We have seven returning starters from last year and the experience they gained last season should only make them better.”
Returning to the mound will be lefties Kyle Curtis, Lane Thebeau, and Clay Thebeau. The Trojans’ right-handers are Doug Davenport, Kaleb Harris, and Jacob Eastwood.
“I believe our pitching staff is going to be our strength this year,” Boedeker said.
Outside of the pitching staff, he said he’ll be leaning on his seniors to help guide the younger players on the team.
“I always lean on my seniors for leadership,” Boedeker said. “Most of these guys are entering into their fourth season of varsity baseball, so there really isn’t much they haven’t seen.”
Community R-VI’s 2013 season will be its first run in the Class 1, District 9 realm of EMO.
“I expect a very competitive season and district,” Boedeker said. “We play in one of the toughest conferences in the state and I think the experience we will gain from playing such a difficult schedule will only make us better come district time.”
He said he expects a strong defensive middle with junior catcher Shane Myers and sophomore second basemen Doug Davenport. With solid work in the cage, Boedeker said the crew looks forward to hitting outside. The Trojans host Madison at 5 p.m. Monday, March 18, to kick off the 2013 season.
