Watch for the VFW Auxiliary Post 2173 at an intersection near you as they pass out Buddy Poppies for donations on Saturday morning, May 29. There will also be canisters at local businesses for donations.
The money raised from the poppies will go toward the Veterans Home and Hospital, the National Home for Children, phone cards for wounded veterans and active duty personnel, flags for the cemeteries and other projects that support our veterans.
The Poppy was adopted as the official memorial flower in 1922 by the VFW. The poppies are assembled by disabled and disadvantaged veterans who are paid for their work, providing them with a form of financial assistance and giving them a feeling of belonging by doing the job.
Memorial Day is about the sacrifices of our military. The VFW’s motto is “Honor the Dead by helping the Living.” — Judy Hull, Buddy Poppy chairman
