Pike County motorists will have to put up with more summer detours when MoDot shuts off Hwy. 54 to Bowling Green on Monday, June 18.
Work on two bridges over Noix Creek and the North Noix Creek branch will keep the road closed to all but local traffic until Monday, Aug. 6, if all goes well.
The bridges will be widened to 16 feet, according to MoDOT. Traffic statistics show 4,313 vehicles pass through the bridge areas daily.
“It was very important to schedule the closings so it would not impact spring planting and fall harvests, and for the closure to occur while school is out for the summer,” said MoDOT Construction Engineer Macy Rodenbaugh.
Signs will warn truckers, tourists and locals of the closures and detours.
• The bridge replacement at Noix Creek between Bowling Green and Louisiana at Vera will close the road June 18, for 50 days. The estimated completion is Monday, Aug. 6 to replace the 83-year-old span.
The main detour for Pike County residents and tourists will be over Hwy. UU to Hwy. 61. Residents can also utilize Hwy. NN and Hwy. 79 to access Hwy. 61.
The MoDOT commercial vehicle detour is over Hwy. 79 south, to Hwy. B west at Elsberry and then to Hwy. 61 north or south.
Another section of Hwy. 54 will close Monday, June 25 for 40 days over the North Fork of Noix Creek between Bowling Green and Louisiana just west of Allparts Inc.
The estimated completion is Friday, Aug. 3 and the detours are the same for the 53-year-old bridge.
Meanwhile, the Hwy. D road closure between Calumet and Eolia to widen the bridge there to two lanes is slated to be finished Wednesday, June 27, weather permitting.
