Sixteen Susanna Randolph Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution members welcomed their family and guests to the annual Friends and Family Night at the St. Pat’s Hall, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in Vandalia, on Thursday, Nov. 7, bringing a total of more than 50 people together to enjoy a traditional turkey dinner prepared by Karen Levering.
Before the catered turkey dinner was served, Regent Joy Davis led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag.
After dinner, guest speaker Lou Eisenbrandt, of Leawood, Kan., spoke to the group, sharing memories of her experiences in the Vietnam War. Those memories were the basis of her book “Vietnam Nurse: Mending & Remembering,” copies of which she brought with her and had for sale.
As in her book, Eisenbrandt shared how a midwestern woman, born with a wanderlust and a lot of courage, found herself serving as a nurse in Vietnam during some of the most dangerous and damaging stretches of the war in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
The crowd paid close attention to the author’s interesting talk. A Powerpoint presentation showed many photos from the book of her time in Vietnam.
After Eisenbrandt spoke, DAR member Vicki Wright gave an introduction on the history and meaning of the Quilts of Valor presentations, after which she introduced the two veterans to receive the quilts that evening. Both Quilts of Valor were made by Susanna Chapter DAR member Ruth Miller, of Vandalia.
Those attending the event included Susanna Randolph Chapter members Carolyn Ball, Muriel Beshears, Alta Bland, Joy Brummitt, Ann Carter, Elaine Dameron, Joy Davis, Sheila Ennis, Judy Flowers, Brenda Gower, Glee Hanson, Joy Hoyt, Martina Hoyt-Vail, Ruth Miller, Donna Wilson and Vicki Wright; three M. Graham Clark Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution, members Bob Bland, J.C. Gower; Alida Gower; Gina and Jeff Salois; Kristi and John Pierceall; Pete and Mindy Nasir; Paula Pattison; Colby Walton; Reagan Wright-McAfee; Shera Dameron; Mary Lou Hoyt; Gertie Gower; and Monte Hanson.
